The second release of Cadenza Lab, Cadenza's new digital label, comes from two of the leading lights on the Santiago scene: Francisco Allendes and Marcelo Rosselot, the heads behind Chile's Andes Music label. Francisco is no stranger to Cadenza, having already dropped "Llovizna," a collaboration with Felipe Venegas, in 2009. The two previously collaborated on 2008's De Vuelta al Planeta Tierra, and now they drop the Catrianca EP, featuring two supple, grooving tracks that are in it for the long haul.

"El Grillo, el Indio y el Robot" translates as "The Cricket, the Indian and the Robot," and it's the perfect title for a track that's full of percussive chatter, with shakers, claves, tambourines and more setting up a steady chikka-chikka rhythm, answered in tight, chicken-scratch funk licks on guitar. They show off their prowess as master arrangers, layering drum machines and sampled percussion into a groove that swings like a hammock on a sailboat on the high seas. But they don't stop there, building gradually, almost sneakily, into a jazzy Rhodes solo. The climax is as exhilarating as a swim in a mountain lake, and it's sunshine and wide-open vistas all the way back down.

"El Ladron de Mails" also digs into Latin percussion... with gusto, fleshing out a driving house groove with jazz drum fills, crazy polyrhythms and the kind of warm, rounded tones you just can't get from a machine. Muted cries and zig-zagging organ solos contribute to the sense of controlled mayhem, and the boys know just how to prolong the madness, teasing us with snatches of melody without ever giving away the full monty. By the time a tribal choir explodes into earshot, there's no holding back. That "Ladron" means thief is only appropriate for a track like this: it's a show-stealer, all right. more

released May 3, 2010

CAL003

For its third release, Cadenza Lab goes local, presenting an old friend from the Geneva scene. For our latest release we are excited to announce new Cadenza and Cadenza Lab artist Andrea Oliva with the ʻBeats to Beatsʼ Ep. Hailing from Basel, Switzerland, Andrea Oliva packs a mixed bag of musical influences, a lifetime of DJ experience and infectious enthusiasm into his character and work. A continually growing artist and dedicated music lover, Andrea is heavily involved in Switzerlandʼs club of the moment Nordstern as well as his performing his thriving gig calendar and luming release schedule that includes a solo Ep on Cadenza in early 2012 and an imminent release with Israeli label Be As One.

ʻBeats 2 Beatsʼ begins its escapade through rhythm with the rolling percussive sounds of “Same Old Sheep”. Built upon hypnotic drum beats with concrete solidarity, its journey goes on to reveal depths of ascending muted vocal cuts and dry tinny cracks. “Same Old Sheep” is impossible not to be seduced by as its meandering beats, arresting vocals and ethereal shimmers dart across the underlying groove. Andrea switches things up a notch with “Feel Body”, delving directly into crisp hats and hollow kicks from the word go.... Riddled with swelling pockets of sound, “Feel Body” surprises at every corner; momentary drum syncopations, quivering brushes and rising groggy vocals that evolve into smooth, sensual swoons. The tip-toeing concoctions of demure elements wind themselves around the deep rooted deep bass line and plentiful builds and breaks. Strewn with diversity and drive, it works on the ears and feet in equal measure.

“Lambada” by name but most certainly not by nature, this thoroughly raw yet deep house track exercises Andreaʼs clear old school house influences. Priding itself of a warm bass line, jazzy hats and flirtations with delayed keys, it evokes a classic and timeless house sound. “Sitar” closes this finely executed four track composition from Andreas Oliva with a truly unique touch. A man who clearly knows how to make his floor move, “Sitar” is drenched with a plethora of intelligently layered soundscapes. Tribal drums, eastern strings, chopped vocals and warped cosmic samples link hands to parade their finest attributes to their by now captivated audience. With such an abundance of musical styles streamed throughout ʻBeats to Beatsʼ we are more than confident that the new Cadenza team member is firmly on his way. more

released July 4, 2011

CAL005

2010 was a joyous year for Cadenza with the launch of their digital sub-label Cadenza Lab. A finely selected ensemble of Cadenzaʼs artists have emerged from their studioʼs with a concoction of tracks ranging from head strong techno to 4/4 fuelled house and emotive ambience. A sharp and percussive opening, ʻRise Againʼ is dominated by tightly sprung pockets of sound and a glorious female vocal that bumps and grinds with deep house demeanour. Cadenza showcase favourite Dani Casarano serves up lashings of attitude next with ʻTo Ruleʼ, a funk fuelled concoction of vocal snippets with distinct classic feel and a deep bass line to match. F600 join the crew with the sultry Latino influenced ʻHe say a 200 las empanaʼ. Eerie soundscapes and a dark, deep spoken vocal seep through the minimal platform while... guitar licks lighten and delight F600ʼs rhythmic signature. Following the highly set standard, two of Santiagoʼs brightest lights team up for a collaborative track entitled ʻHavaneseʼ. Francsico Allendes and Marcelo Rosselot throw in hypnotic drum patterns and subtle builds and breaks that are made to enlighten the dance floor.

Laurent aka Laps is a firm member of the Cadenza outfit and this compilation simply wouldnʼt be complete without him. His latest Ep ʻUp and Down My Spineʼ with Gregory Poncet is already making waves globally and we are delighted with his contribution of ʻNo Computeʼ. Boasting a sturdy and boisterous bass line and delicately executed vocals; ʻNo Computeʼsʼ groove and electric key arrangement are irrisisteable. Cadenza boss and head Vagabundo Luciano glides in with ʻManʼs Friendʼ. Instantly arresting, the deeper than deep bass line reverbs uncontrollably as gentle percussion dances above. In typical Luciano style, itʼs all about the drama and thereʼs certainly no shortage of it in ʻManʼs Friendʼ as orchestral strings swoop from beneath in sharp tension building movements.

Michel Cleis has been part of the family since 2009 when he released the ʻUva Fragolinaʼ Ep. His ʻTributeʼ is undeniably tribal with round, hollow drums and a chanting male vocal. At the half way mark it turns on its head with flying jazzy brass, a cleverly concocted and contrasting touch to its beginnings. Pounding us into another atmosphere is Mirko Loko with his remix of the immensely talented Martina Topley Birdʼs ʼBaby Blueʻ. The Massive Attackʼs vocalist is at the very top of her game at present and with immense pleasure we have her shimmering lyrical charm on our VA remixed by Mirko Loko. ʼBaby Blueʻ, taken from Martinaʼs late 2010 album has been pulled apart and pieced together again by Cadenza artist Mirko Loko. Keeping the originalʼs hooky appeal firmly in check, Mirko plays with rapid house rhythm sections and chops the vocals to create a remix sure to fire a dance floor whilst bathing Martina Topley Birdʼs flawless lyrics in their finest light.

Cadenza Lab welcomes Parisian Psykoloco and his knack of blending Latino origins with forward thinking house and techno sensibilities; ʻMerry Blues Grooveʼ is no exception to the rule. A rolling 4/4 groove steams its way under sexy and breathy vocals, rounded up by complex drum patterns, clicks and crunch. The finale comes in the form of ʻEmotional Landscapeʼ from Scan Mode. A true musical journey it opens with moody and dark vibes, steering the atmosphere with determination. Cleverly though, the journey takes a sharp turn as an emotive and drawn out synth sweeps through. Francisco Allendes made his first steps with Cadenza in 2009 with the ʻLloviznaʼ EP; so impressed were the label that they invited him back again in 2010 alongside Marcello Rosselot with ʻCatranciaʼ. As the old proverb says, “all good things come in threeʼs” and Francisco is back on Cadenza Lab in 2011, this time appearing with Desolat favourite and rising talent Yaya.

Rough elegance immediately springs to mind when hearing title track “Tiago” – its tatty edges and vintage allure encase what is in fact, a polished and contemporary production. Swelling beds of muffled synths, slick hi-hat taps and clad percussion create the past while the bouncing springs and modern manipulation of vocals ensure the future in this deep house bomb. There are hidden gems around every corner as “Tiago” develops its chanting song and groove ridden bass into a see-saw of old and new.

Making a grand entrance as “Aurora”, our second EP track... swallows from the ground with a rumbling sub-bass. Holding down its first impressions, the extravagance continues as a concoction of warped and humorous vocals exchange over random guitar plucks, reversed samples and a rolling groove. Cut to the piece de résistance though, and an immense solo Organ melody wraps itself jazzily around “Aurora” until the irresistible break hurtles back into the rhythm. Dirty tech house with a beating heart is up last as “Tiago Beats” vocal taunts provide texture, tone and pitch in a collective rhythm. Underpinned by the dark stab of the bass line, the chaotic injection of sound bites and carefully placed instrumentation, “Tiago” closes Cadenza Labʼs eighth output with a unique and finely arranged track. more

released February 20, 2012

CAL011

Cadenza welcomes the mysterious and evocative El Pocho collective to the label for the group's first ever EP. A Mi Amigo features the vocals of master percussionist, producer, and singer José Mangual Jr., who was the lead vocalist of Willie Colón's orchestra back in the early 1970s. Accompanied by live drums and rolling percussion, the track has a gorgeous, flowing, infectious rhythm to it. The carnival has arrived!

Second track, Don Quixote, has a darker, sci-fi flavoured South American vibe. His debut Cadenza EP 'Mzuzu' in 2011 featured two cuts built around a pulsating heart of bass, and here on his second Cadenza EP he plays with the intoxicating frequency again, but this time it's dirtier, funkier and housier.

If 'Mzuzu Chant' and 'Adagio' were fuel injected by bass, 'Approaching Dawn' and 'Octaves' are pure bass symphonies. The tracks remind us that, whilst bass in its raw form can be an effective blunt instrument for knocking a dancefloor senseless, when it is carefully crafted into a melody, it becomes something more potent: it gets inside your head. After all, if you want to shake the foundations of a club to the ground, you might as well do it with style.

The first track 'Approaching Dawn' features loose house rhythms and short samples on loop. The whole rhythm structure is free spirited, like a smokey percussion outfit who don't mind dropping out of time occasionally if it means they can sneak in another puff of ganja. When the bass melody hits early on in the track, it doesn't let go, forever rolling through its notes like a broken escalator that rises up four steps before dropping you back down those same four steps. Yet... despite the repetition, its a ride you don't want to jump off.

With hi hat sprinkles and congo rattles providing added energy, 'Approaching Dawn' has a wild tribal feel at times, but its ground shaking bassline gives it an urban rave vibe. It conjures up the memory of a gritty London or Berlin warehouse rattling into the night. As the track progresses, the bassline remains in tact, like a solid and reliable clock, leaving the beats free to run undisciplined into a happy mess.

The aptly titled second track 'Octaves' features a very low frequency bass melody that acts as a musical counterpoint to some warm pad chords that play an octave or two above, guiding the track elegantly like the captain of ship propelled by his rowers below.

There's a lot of speed in the bass at times, yet there is little aggression in its overall direction as the soft pads above wrap it in a warm Detroit-esque blanket. There's a deep joy to be found amongst Martinez' smart changes in pace and tone here. With its few simple elements, 'Octaves' manages to construct an absorbing dancefloor story that leave you on the edge of your seat. more

released June 25, 2012

CAL013

Chilean duo Francisco Allendes and Marcelo Rosselot were the first producers to release on Cadenza’s sister label, Cadenza Lab, following label boss Luciano’s initial offering. Their 2010 ‘Catrianca’ EP featured a couple of tropical tech house jams that hit the Ibiza dancefloors right in the gut – El Ladron De Mails in particular was a big track for the duo (even Giles Peterson was a fan of it).

Here on their new ‘Peter Veneno’ EP they refine that summer sound further still. ‘Peter Veneno’ features two unhurried and creative house jams that on the face of it, suggest the duo have a real confidence about the way their rhythms harness energy and inspire movement. The 11.39 lead track ‘Peter Veneno’ features a community-like approach to its arrangement. Imagine a circle of musicians, each one given the space to show off what they can add to a hypnotic tech house loop, like break- dancers at a B-boy meet. There... are sleazy jazz trumpet/saxophone moments, big drum sections, funky guitar solos, classical piano breakdowns, and chants from the wings, all powered by electronic loops and bleeps. You could say the track is a modern version of world music, an electronic ode to the joys of jamming, or simply, culturally confused.

The EP’s second track ‘Neo’ is more direct, and works its magic through a series of warped house loops, twisted indecipherable vocals and funky drums that combine to form a new kind of filtered disco. The loops are short and sweet, which keeps the energy high. And the filters are deliberately rough and edgy – like how an overexcited DJ might work some new filters for the first time. Groovy! As the tension builds through a repetitive vocal loop, ‘Neo’ digs its nails in and becomes undeniably exciting. Moodymann fans will surely dig it. more

released July 26, 2012

CAL014

It is the height of summer, if you hadn't noticed. The dance starts back with the dark trippin’ NewYork-House flavoured “Havanese” of Francisco Allendes and Marcelo Rosselot, and the sub bass injected percussive outbreak of Guillaume And The Coutu Dumonts’s remix of Ernesto Ferreyra’s “Letting Go”. Gliding without slacking, we find the powerful dark unsettling Cósmico remix by Alexi Delano of the ungodly murky “Berlink” (originally produced by Area51 featuring Tea Time)... and the fast technologic minimalistic groove of Luciano’s “Lost in Lymbo.
