MLM Introducing: Hans Groover - Lil' Jazz [MLM028]

Toronto-based Hans Groover brings a broad musical background to his productions. With influences stretching from jazz, blues and funk to rock and heavy metal, he draws on the rhythms and character of different genres to explore new territory within club music. His approach centres around creating moments of discovery, bringing unexpected sounds and moods into the mix.

The Inspiration

As you can probably tell from the title of the release, these tracks came from a period where I was really immersed in jazz. It can be a difficult sound to translate into a club environment, but I wanted to explore the idea of writing fusion-inspired toplines over a house groove. I feel particularly inspired by jazz-drumming greats like Elvin Jones. His playing has such a strong connection between jazz and Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms, which I spent a lot of time studying as a player. On the title track, I wanted to bring that Latin influence into the bassline and drums, while building the track around a topline melody that I wrote myself.

The Family

It’s a really great feeling to be releasing on the label. Like many people in this genre, Luciano is an artist I have a lot of respect for and I really love the direction he has taken Machaca. I’m very happy to be joining such a great project and to have these tracks become part of the label.

The Future

I’m currently sitting on a really large folder of unreleased music, with a lot of exciting releases across different labels that I’ll be announcing very soon. I can’t share all of them just yet, but one I’m particularly looking forward to is my Hot Creations release next month. There’s a lot more to come from me this year and I’m really excited for everyone to hear what comes next.
